European animated film festival Balkanima started in 2004 at the Students’ City Culture Center - Academic Film Club, following the initiative of professor Nikola Majdak (1927-2013), one of the pioneers of Serbian animation, renowned film cinematographer and director. Main goal of the festival is to have a presentation of the European author and student short animated films, with aspects of promoting Serbian and Balkan animation scene. Festival is presented as a competition. Jury is comprised of animators, filmmakers, theorists and visual artists from Europe. Aside from promoting and presenting, goal of the festival is to create a network of domestic authors and students with their European counterparts. Aside from the competition programs, each edition of the festival has many accompanying programs (workshops, panels, presentations, exhibitions…) which are deeply connected with animation or similar visual artform. The festival is held during the month of October.
